John’s Beetroot Bloody Mary or Virgin Beetroot Bloody Mary My Cotswold Kitchen

John’s Beetroot Bloody Mary or Virgin Beetroot Bloody Mary

Ingredients:

Makes one drink (double or quadruple the quantities as necessary)

  • 50ml Broken Clock Vodka (omit this for virgin)
  • 2 Dashes Smoky Chipotle Tabasco
  • 2 Dash Original Pepper Tabasco
  • 4 Dashes of Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2tsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 tsp of pickle brine – I used pickle juice from a jar of gherkins.
  • 120ml beetroot and tomato sauce (proportions 1 part beetroot to 2 parts tomato juice. For the beetroot I used James White Beet It Organic juice. Tomato is the chilled one not pre-spiced or carton from concentrate
  • Garnish with celery stick, lemon wedge and a sprig of sage.

Method:

  1. Combine and stir the ingredients and chill in the fridge in the pitcher until ready to serve

The obvious story around the origins of the Bloody Mary name comes from the nickname given to Queen Mary 1/Mary Tudor who had a penchant for burning religious dissidents at the stake.  This cocktail is quite the opposite, reviving those who might wake up with a killer hangover. The beetroot adds a lovely earthy depth and freshness and is a great antioxidant.
